defining it in 2026.

Premier.
Independent.
Open.

Northfield was founded to help investors make better decisions by surfacing the hidden risks in every security they hold. Achieving that meant understanding "everything everywhere," — so Northfield opened its doors: its research, technology, and team, to commercial, academic, and government partners alike. Northfield has always called this principle Open, and believes it’s the path to innovation.

The ConvictionNorthfield

Independent. Open. Trailblazing.

In the past decade, every credible independent risk model developer at institutional scale was acquired by a portfolio management system vendor. Once inside a product roadmap, methodology answers to a different master. Northfield stayed independent — its research agenda still set by the problem (help people make better decisions), not by a PMS integration requirement or a product cycle.

Forty years of that isn’t a credential. It’s what happens when open, independent methodology compounds without interruption, across market cycles most competitors never faced as independent companies.

Northfield Risk Models
Factor Modeling

The factor model library. Equity, fixed income, derivative, multi-asset, and private market risk — each decomposed into economic risk factors, comparable across every major asset class and financial center.

Short-horizon and long-horizon models for the full range of portfolio and asset-liability use cases. Continuous open development means the models respond to new regimes rather than lagging them.

Northfield Open Optimizer
Portfolio Construction

Constraint-aware portfolio construction and rebalancing. Open by design — accepts inputs from external risk models, returns outputs in formats your stack already uses. Holds the full factor model in working state, not an approximation.

Tracking error, factor limits, transaction costs, ESG screens, liquidity constraints. Tax-aware optimization for taxable accounts: the optimal portfolio after taxes is solved directly. The word "Open" is the product's actual architecture.

Implementation
Implementation

Portfolio implementation tooling. Multi-account rebalancing and trade scheduling with transaction cost optimization built in. Translates portfolio-level decisions into account-level instructions across heterogeneous account structures.

Galaxy is directionally moving toward open source.

ResearchNorthfield

The published record.

Open research produces better methodology. That is the thesis Northfield has been testing since 1985. The 2,000+ papers, the journal, the IAQF award, the academic conference presence — none of it is a marketing program. It is the development process run publicly.

2,000+
Published research papers
The published record of methodology development — journal articles, conference papers, and research notes, many of them peer-reviewed. Open to read, challenge, replicate, and build upon.
Journal of Asset
Management
An independent peer-reviewed academic journal edited by Dan DiBartolomeo from Cambridge, MA — separate from Northfield's commercial operations. A genuine scholarly publication.
IAQF / Northfield
Financial Engineer
of the Year
The IAQF's annual award for outstanding contribution to quantitative finance — co-sponsored and presented by Northfield. The field's own recognition of its best independent work.

Dan has led Northfield since its founding in 1985 — building the factor model methodology, stewarding the research program, and maintaining the institutional relationships that define what independent means in quantitative finance.

Editor of the Journal of Asset Management, a peer-reviewed publication independent of Northfield's commercial operations. Presenting sponsor of the IAQF / Northfield Financial Engineer of the Year award. Regular contributor to CFA Institute, PRMIA, and the academic conferences at which the methodology is challenged and refined.

The field's best work, recognized by independent practitioners.

The IAQF / Northfield Financial Engineer of the Year award is the International Association for Quantitative Finance's annual recognition for outstanding contribution to the discipline. Northfield has co-sponsored and presented the award since its inception — a genuine expression of what the firm believes the field owes itself: public recognition of its best independent work.

Now: ALPHANorthfield

Redefining the standard — again.

In 2025, Northfield partnered with OpenFinance and Market76 to create ALPHA — a decision platform built on the conviction that better decisions require better methodology, better data infrastructure, and better expression of reasoning to every audience an institution has to reach. The methodology is unchanged. Its reach is wider.

Forty years of open, independent research built the standard. ALPHA is the platform that extends it — the research, information and technology behind better decisions.
